Dear Sarah Palin

Two Words: GO AWAY!

By RACHEL D'ORO,
Associated Press Writer

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is going on the offensive against news organizations and bloggers she says are perpetuating malicious gossip about her and her children. But political observers say the former Republican vice presidential candidate can't have it both ways: trotting out the children to showcase her family values, then trying to shield them from scrutiny.

Palin's criticism also raises questions about her motivations because she has said she is open to a presidential run in 2012.

"I think she's positioning herself. She's attacking the media as a way to generate support among a base she hopes will support her," said Leonard Steinhorn, a professor of communications at American University in Washington and an expert on the presidency.

Palin shied away from interviews during the campaign, although her children often accompanied her on her travels, including her oldest daughter, Bristol, who was pregnant at the time.

But in recent weeks, she has personally reached out to media outlets such as People magazine and The Associated Press to complain about information she claimed is wrong.

She slammed reports that 18-year-old Bristol Palin and the teen's fiance are high school dropouts. The governor insists the two are not dropouts because they enrolled in correspondence courses.

The couple last month had a son — the governor's first grandchild.

The governor said she is speaking out to set the record straight, not because of any political aspirations.

"It's all about the family," she said. "I'm wired in a way that I can take the criticism. I can take the shots. But any mother would want to protect their children from lies and scandalous reporting."

In a Jan. 5 interview with conservative filmmaker John Ziegler, Palin also questioned whether Caroline Kennedy's quest for a New York Senate seat was as heavily scrutinized as her vice presidential campaign.

When her comments were reported, she chastised journalists for taking her remarks "out of context to create adversarial situations."

Steinhorn is not alone among experts who believe the first-term governor is trying to keep her name in the spotlight. A newcomer to national politics when she was nominated, Palin energized the Republican base but also attracted intense criticism that she had little substance.

Palin "does seem to have ambitions, and this is one way of staying in the public eye," said Janis Edwards, an associate professor of communication studies at the University of Alabama and an expert on women candidates. One of Edwards' classes monitored Palin's role in a project called "The Palin Watch."

Palin's grievances include what she calls "false stories" such as a talk show host's suggestion that she helped Levi Johnston get a job in Alaska's North Slope oil fields, circumventing eligibility rules since he does not have a high school diploma.

Johnston's father, an engineer for an oil-field services company, has said his position accounted for any help Levi received in getting the apprenticeship job.

Palin also lashed out at bloggers and others perpetuating Internet rumors that her 9-month-old son, Trig, is actually Bristol Palin's child from a secret previous pregnancy.

Her decision to strike back at news organizations seems to contradict the governor's earlier statements on how politicians should respond to media coverage.

Months before she was named John McCain's running mate, Palin attended a leadership forum in Los Angeles and was asked her opinion on then-Sen. Hillary Clinton's allegations that she was being unfairly treated by the media during the primaries.

Palin said Clinton did herself a disservice to even mention it. The governor said it bothered her to hear Clinton "bring that attention to herself on that level."

Palin said her opinion has not changed since the March 2008 event and insisted that defending her children is her only motivation.

"I'm not whining about the treatment of the press, but I am calling reporters on the family aspect of this," she said. "I think it's unprecedented in some respects what I have seen with my children."

It's not unprecedented. The children and spouses of high-profile politicians always draw attention.

Early in President George Bush's first term, his twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara, made headlines after an embarrassing run-in with the law for underage drinking.

So did Kitty Dukakis, the wife of former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, when she was treated for alcoholism after her husband's unsuccessful presidential campaign in 1988. She later suffered a relapse and was hospitalized after drinking rubbing alcohol.

Two weeks before President Obama's inauguration, his daughters Sasha and Malia were escorted to their new schools past a line of waiting photographers.

Joe the Plumber: McCain 'appalled me'

By: Andy Barr
December 9, 2008 10:15 PM EST

Joe Wurzelbacher lashed out Tuesday at former GOP presidential nominee John McCain, the man who made Wurzelbacher famous as “Joe the Plumber.”

Wurzelbacher told conservative radio host Glenn Beck that he felt “dirty” after “being on the campaign trail and seeing some of the things that take place.”

Recalling a conversation he had with McCain about the $700 billion financial industry bailout in September, Wurzelbacher said: “When I was on the bus with him, I asked him a lot of questions about the bailout because most Americans did not want that to happen.”

“I asked him some pretty direct questions,” he continued. “Some of the answers you guys are gonna receive — they appalled me, absolutely. I was angry. In fact, I wanted to get off the bus after I talked to him.”

Asked why he didn’t leave McCain’s campaign if he was “appalled” by the candidate, Wurzelbacher said, “honestly, because the thought of Barack Obama as president scares me even more.”

While Wurzelbacher was critical of McCain during the interview, he had nothing but praise for his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. “Sarah Palin is absolutely the real deal,” he said.

Alpha's Council Race

The Borough of Alpha had its two seat council race heat up in the last few weeks. Below I have posted the two articles that were published before and after the election along with my comments. I decided to reserve comment until after the election due to my brother being an incumbent candidate in the race.

Matt DeLaRosa and Chris Pfefferle launch write-in campaign for two council seats up for election

By SARAH WOJCIK
The Express-Times
Thursday, October 30, 2008

ALPHA | Two Alpha residents have scattered signs throughout the borough, hoping their names stick in the minds of neighbors as firmly as the stakes have taken to lawns.

Republicans Matt DeLaRosa and Chris Pfefferle have launched a write-in campaign for the council seats of Democratic incumbents Robert Gara and Alex Zikas.

DeLaRosa and Pfefferle said the last-minute battle for the council seats stems from their belief that the all-Democrat council is in need of variety.

"Whether the council was made up of all Democrats or all Republicans, you need some diversity," said Pfefferle.

After missing the ballot deadline, he said, the two considered waiting until next year's election but attending a few meetings renewed their desire to run.

"A lot of people want change now," said DeLaRosa.

Two-term Councilman Gara said he welcomed competition.

"I do commend them on running, I really do, but it's not a walk in the park," Gara said.

Zikas, a one-term councilman, expressed confusion on the candidates' method of seeking office.

"To be honest, I don't really know them," Zikas said. "To me, it's a little odd that they chose to run at the last minute when they had the chance four months ago to get on the ballot."

Council members serve three-year terms and are compensated $2,100 a year. They are also offered state health insurance or money amounting to half of the value of those benefits.

Zikas and Councilman Louis Pettinelli said they take partial benefits and the remaining cash balance. Councilman Harry Zikas Jr. said he takes partial benefits but refuses the remainder of the money and Gara said he takes money in lieu of the benefits. Councilwoman Klara Tarsi said she refuses both.

Councilman John Hajdu did not immediately return calls for comment.

Pfefferle and DeLaRosa expressed discontent with the practice of taking money in lieu of benefits and vowed it would be an issue they would confront if elected.

Gara said he was concerned about infrastructure needs, shared service opportunities and regulations regarding the Council on Affordable Housing.

Zikas said he wants to concentrate on lowering taxes and creating programs for children.

Pfefferle and DeLaRosa said the preservation of Alpha's industrial sector is of pressing importance.

"If you want to boost your town, you need to be open," Pfefferle said. "You need to be business-friendly."
#1. Alpha's Council is not 'all-Democrat'. Councilman Lou Pettinelli is a Republican and that's commonly known around town.

#2. I can only comment on myself, but for the record I do take the dental insurance that is offered. Now, while I can let the Borough pay for 100% of the cost, I reimburse the Borough for the maximum allowed by the State Health Benefits Plan, which is 50%. The dental plan costs approximately $40 - $45 a month and each month, half that amount is deducted from my council salary. The other issue is the actual health insurance plan. I refuse the health benefits and the reimbursement that I'm eligible for upon refusal. That part of the article was a bit misleading and could have been better explained.
Alpha incumbents Robert Gara and Alex Zikas remain at their posts despite write-in challengers

From staff reports
The Express-Times
Friday, November 07, 2008

Incumbents Alex Zikas and Robert Gara will remain on Alpha's council despite a challenge from two write-in candidates late in the election season.

Republicans Matt DeLaRosa and Chris Pfefferle tried to amass attention weeks before the election to unseat the two Democrats, but they fell short. According to Patricia Kolb, Warren County clerk, Gara and Zikas each received 594 votes while 335 were cast for write-in candidates.

Provisional ballots are still being counted, she said, so there is no information yet available to determine how many votes DeLaGrosa and Pfefferle received individually.

Kolb said most of the 335 votes were likely split between the two challengers.

Gara had been seeking his third term this year and Zikas was running for his second term. Alpha council members' terms last for three years. They are compensated $2,100 a year. They are also offered state health insurance or money amounting to half of the value of those benefits.

The incumbents' victory keeps the council an all-Democratic body.
#1. I would like to congratulate Bob and my brother, Alex, for their victory on Tuesday. They ran on their records, which is always tough to do, and came out on top.

#2. Again, the Borough of Alpha Council is not an 'all-Democratic' body as Councilman Pettinelli is a Republican.

OBAMA WINS!

November 4, 2008 - YES, HE DID!

President-elect Obama with Vice-President-elect Biden

What an amazing night!

Take it all in, President-elect Obama!

The 44th President of the United States of America

The First Family

I spent election night watching the results with my friends Elizabeth & Simon.  Once the election was called for Senator Obama, we popped the cork and toasted the incoming administration.  After Obama's speech, we headed out into Times Square and the energy was just so electrifying - I can't even begin to fully describe it.  There was this sense, this feeling of unity, which is something I haven't felt since the days after September 11th.

America gave President-elect Obama a clear mandate for change and I truly believe he will make us all proud.

I voted!

Last Thursday I took a quick trip up to the County Clerk's Office in Belvidere, NJ and voted by absentee ballot. I have a few things to do on Election Day and didn't want to rush, so I figured it would be best to get it done early. The employees at the Clerk's Office were absolutely wonderful and the absentee process was quick and easy. I'm all about sharing, so here's who I voted for:

President & Vice President: Barack Obama & Joe Biden

US Senator: Frank Lautenberg

US Representative: Dennis Shulman

County Freeholder: Adam Fitting

Borough Council: Robert Gara & Alex Zikas

Question #1 & #2: No

I don't think there are any surprises there. Good Luck to all!

Funny Story: About 2 1/2 years ago, I visited the County Clerk's Office to renew my passport. While filling out my paperwork, I took off my jacket and placed it on a chair. Well, as you can imagine, I left my jacket there. I figured I would go back sometime to pick it up, but I never did. After a few months, I thought they would have either given it to goodwill or thrown it away. As I was waiting for my absentee application to be processed, I had a lovely woman ask me if I had left my jacket there some time ago and I replied, surprisingly, with a Yessss. She asked if I wanted it back, because they still had it. Lo and behold, she went to the back and brought out my black windbreaker. I was completely shocked and gave her a big hug. I couldn't believe they actually had it! Now, that's customer service!

They said he was unprepared...

I absolutely love this.

Get ready for the FINAL DEBATE!
My friends, will McCain go all in and risk it all tonight or will he try to act Presidential for once?

I think we're gonna see Senator 'Get off my lawn' McCain tonight...You Betcha!

That one!?

That one!?  Are you serious, John McCain?  That one has a name...he's your colleague - Barack Obama.  Show some decency and respect.  You're sinking faster than a mobster in the East River and this is why.

Let me remind you all of a little joke Senator McCain made about Chelsea Clinton & Janet Reno back in June of 1998:

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?  Because her father is Janet Reno."

What a maverick!

Palin is Failing

The horror...the horror.

The Palin - Biden Debate is minutes away and I have been waiting for this moment since Sen. McCain introduced Gov. Palin as his Vice-Presidential nominee. Joe, be gentle, she's had a rough few weeks. What am I saying...GIVE IT TO HER! She stood up at that podium during the Republican Convention and ripped you a new one...don't let her get away with anything!
